Objective
The European Commission has launched a pan-European campaign to improve safety on roads with the aim to reduce the number of road accidents by 50% before the year 2010. Specialised in the manufacturing, selling and servicing of heavy trucks and buses, as well as industrial and marine engines, Scania CV AB (15187 Södertälje, Sweden) has decided to contribute to this EU initiative by organising a competition.
The competition is open to a number of member states in which Scania is represented plus a few other countries that are not members of the European Union (Norway, Switzerland and Turkey). The competition, whose winner receives the title "Young European Truck Driver 2010", is called Young European Truck Driver 2010.
Main principles
The best young truck driver in 2010 will be selected at the European final to be held at Scania's headquarter, Södertälje, Sweden between 8 and 9 October 2010.
The candidate who will participate in the final will be selected in a three-round competition.
- Pre-selection theoretical tests
- Regional qualifications
- National final
After the end of the application period, every applicant will be notified, through our website or by letter from our Scania dealers. Those who qualify for the next step will be notified about the location and prerequisites.
Conditions of participating
Each participant of the Young European Truck Driver 2010 competition must meet the following requirements:
- agreed to the terms and conditions of the YETD 2010 Regulations
- born in 1975 or later
- being citizen in one of the participating countries
- C+E category driving licence
- In possession of driver card for digital tachograph
If a driver does not meet any of the above mentioned criteria, he/she cannot qualify for the next rounds. Employees of Scania and its contracted servicing partners are not allowed to participate in the competition.
Selection
Theoretical test
The application form and theory test can be accessed through the national website or dedicated campaign site. The scores of only those competitors will be considered who fully meet the criteria specified in the "Conditions of Participation" section.
By completing and signing the application form, applicants accept that the YETD 2010 regulation will apply.
The theory test consists of a number of questions compiled by experts in relation to the following topics:
- Technical characteristics of trucks
- First-aid
- Transporting hazardous materials
- Laws, regulations
- Fuel-efficient driving
- Safe and defensive driving
One or multiple answers can be given to each question. A maximum score of X can be attained at every test. Answers are scored as follows:
- Right answer -> 1 points
- Wrong answer -> 0 point
- No or all answered -> 0 point
Rules of qualification into the next round
The first competitors with the highest score are qualified (the number differs from country to country).
After the deadline for submitting the tests, we will publish the right answers on our website, at our Scania service shops, and also announce the scores attained by the competitors in a descending order.
Before the regional rounds Scania will check the following documents:
- photo copy of C+E Category driving licence
- photo copy of the document proving nationality and birth date (identity card or passport)
- photo copy of the driver card for digital tachograph
If a candidate does not meet any of the above mentioned requirements, he/she must not participate in the regional qualification. In this case, we will contact the next competitor on the list.
Regional qualification
The regional qualification will be held for those candidates who qualified through the pre-selection test. If a qualified competitor is unable or does not wish to participate in the regional qualification round, the competitor with the next highest score will be given a chance.
Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of various practical tasks including or similar to the following:
- Fuel economy driving
- Safe manoeuvring driving
- Efficient driving
The Fuel economy driving and Efficient driving will be completed by the competitors on the same Scania truck (with loaded semi-trailer). The consumption of the vehicles will be measured using Scania's consumption measuring instrument and the efficiency is measured by Scania Driver Support on-board assessment in real time.
